This time we will be interviewing Chair of the USJC (Japan) Board of Councilors Kathy Matsui, Former Vice Chair and Chief Japan Strategist for Goldman Sachs Japan. In this third dialogue in the series, we will hear from Ms. Matsui about her family story immigrating from Japan to the United States, her career success and leadership on behalf of women in the workforce (“womenomics”) and support of women’s education in Asia, and more.  


About Kathy Matsui




Former Vice Chair and Chief Japan Strategist for Goldman Sachs Japan. During her 30-year research career, Kathy was ranked No. 1 in Japan Equity Strategy multiple times by Institutional Investor Magazine, and her “Womenomics” research was embraced by Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who made it a key pillar of his reform agenda. In 2007, Kathy was chosen as one of the “10 Women to Watch in Asia” by The Wall Street Journal, and was awarded the Ban Kimoon Award for Women’s Empowerment in 2019.


Kathy has served on numerous Japanese government committees aimed at promoting gender diversity. She is a board member of the Asian University for Women (AUW) Support Foundation, chair of the Board of Councillors (Japan) of the US-Japan Council, director of the Fast Retailing Foundation, member of the Council on Foreign Relations and The Nature Conservancy– Asia Pacific Council.


Kathy earned an AB, magna cum laude, in Social Studies from Harvard University and an MA from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies. She is a mother of two and resides in Tokyo, Japan.
