This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which occurred on March 11, 2011 and devastated Japan’s Tohoku region. In commemoration of what was lost in the tremendous disaster, as well as what was built during the recovery, the U.S.-Japan Council is gathering with other U.S.-Japan-related organizations in a special virtual event to symbolize the United States standing together in solidarity with Japan and to underscore the importance of our alliance, friendship, and shared values.
The USJC community and all advocates of the U.S.-Japan friendship are invited to join the event, titled “Remembering March 11, 2011: Looking Back, Looking Forward” on March 10 at 6:00pm ET (March 11 at 8:00am JT). Simultaneous Japanese interpretation will be available. USJC will host this event in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. Partnering organizations include CULCON, the Japan-America Society of Washington DC, Japan Society (NY), the Japan Center for International Exchange, The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, the National Association of Japan-America Societies, Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, The Taylor Anderson Memorial Fund, the United States-Japan Foundation, and the US JET Alumni Association (USJETAA).
We are proud to feature a number of leaders within the U.S.-Japan relationship, including ambassadors, nonprofit leaders and alumni of USJC’s TOMODACHI Initiative, which is a public-private partnership, born out of support for Japan’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, that invests in the next generation of Japanese and American leaders.
