The first part of this session will provide an overview of the coverage, spending, utilization, supply and quality between the Japanese and American health care systems. The second part of this session will focus on options to extend Medicare\u2019s Hospital Trust Fund: lessons from Japan\u2019s statutory health insurance. This event will be joined by guest speaker Council Leader Jared Lane Maeda who is the Principal Analyst at the Health Analysis Division of the Congressional Budget Office.<\/p>\n\n\n

Jared Lane Maeda, PhD, MPH, is a yonsei<\/em>, born and raised on the island of Maui, Hawai\u2019i. He is currently a Principal Analyst (Experienced Health Economist) in the Health Analysis Division at the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), U.S. Congress. At CBO, Dr. Maeda works on various projects related to Medicare, including the solvency of the Hospital Insurance Trust Fund, accountable care organizations, Medicare Advantage and coverage of anti-obesity medications in Part D. In 2019, he received the CBO Director\u2019s Award for his work on single-payer health care systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During 2021-2022, Dr. Maeda was a Mike Mansfield Fellow, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, where he spent a year learning about the Japanese health care system during his stay in Tokyo. Previously, Dr. Maeda worked at the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), Truven Health Analytics (an IBM Watson Company) and wasa Research Scientist at Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Maeda is a recipient of an Agency for Health Care Research and Quality R36 grant. He received his bachelor\u2019s degree in zoology from the University of Hawai\u2019i at Manoa, his master\u2019s degree in public health from Boston University and his doctoral degree in health policy and administration from the University of Illinois. Dr. Maeda\u2019s research has been published in several leading journals, including Health Services Research<\/em>, American Journal of Managed Care<\/em>, Medical Care Research and Review<\/em>, and his work has been cited by The Washington Post<\/em>, The New York Times<\/em>, and Forbes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
