We\u2019ll explore the future of U.S.-Japan relations as both nations navigate new leadership following the elections of President designate Donald Trump and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The dialogue will cover key topics such as security challenges, trade, economic and technological cooperation and global leadership, among other issues. Conducted under strict Chatham House rules, the fireside chat in hybrid format will be moderated by USJC Council Leader Yuka Hayashi, a senior fellow at the Progressive Policy Institute, a Washington, DC think tank. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congressman Adrian Smith has represented the Third District of Nebraska since 2006. Since 2010, he has served on the House Ways and Means Committee. Adrian \u2013 who is Chairman of the Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee \u2013 actively promotes market access for American products throughout the world. He has served as co-chair of the U.S.-Japan Caucus since 2019 where he works to promote trade opportunities and strengthen the historic relationship between the United States and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to his work on trade and tax issues, Adrian serves on the Subcommittee on Health and the Subcommittee on Work and Welfare and is an active member of the Congressional Western Caucus, where he advocates for policies to benefit rural America throughout the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yuka Hayashi is a journalist and a policy analyst with expertise on the economic policies of the United States and Japan and geopolitics in East Asia. She currently serves as a senior fellow at the Progressive Policy Institute, a Washington think tank. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Hayashi was a journalist for the Wall Street Journal for two decades; most recently, she covered trade policy and international economy from Washington under the Trump and Biden administrations. Previously, she was a Journal<\/em> correspondent in her hometown of Tokyo, reporting on Japan\u2019s economy, foreign policy and society. She also worked at Dow Jones and Reuters in New York and Tokyo. Ms. Hayashi\u2019s work has been recognized by various press organizations, including the National Press Club, Gerald Loeb Awards and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
