This was Paul&#8217;s signature approach &#8211; decisive, instinctual, confident, and positive.&nbsp; Since then, Paul has sustained his strong leadership, unselfish commitment to the Council, and devotion to strengthening the legacy of our Founders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul truly gave whatever the Council needed. As the leader of Central Pacific Bank, he ensured emergency CARES Act funding for the Council, top-tier sponsorship, and technical advice. He and his wife, Lynda, gave generously and consistently, inspiring other board members and individuals to increase their support to the Council. Paul saw the importance of USJC convening a high-profile virtual \u201cBilateral Boardroom\u201d early in the pandemic; encouraged the Council to be an early mover on bilateral climate and sustainability issues; and supported our planning of an in-person fall 2022 Annual Conference in Tokyo (an approach that seemed slightly crazy until, in the end, it revealed itself to be brilliant timing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-560x373.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-493x329.jpg 493w, https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-915x610.jpg 915w, https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/52505092753_9d86516c30_o-287x191.jpg 287w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout and above it all, Paul never lost sight of his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/japannews.yomiuri.co.jp\/society\/general-news\/20220828-54333\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abiding belief in the next generation leaders<\/a>, starting with Japanese Americans Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) alumni, as the future of U.S.-Japan relations. The ELP50 program was the crown jewel in his dedication to this community. I have no idea how he was able to give as much time, thought, and energy to the Council as he did, while still actively leading many other non-profits, being devoted to his family, holding prestigious board appointments, and staying active in the community. Oh, and did I mention his \u201cday job\u201d running a bank, earning him recognition as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiibusiness.com\/2022-ceo-of-the-year-paul-yonamine-of-central-pacific-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CEO of the Year<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul&#8217;s leadership and dedication came through in his last decisive act during his chairmanship\u2014recruiting the amazing duo of Susan Morita and Kathy Matsui to succeed him (more on them in the next newsletter). We have a lot to look forward to thanks to Paul. You can read Paul\u2019s farewell message&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usjapancouncil.org\/news\/farewell-message-from-paul-yonamine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As if saying \u201cMahalo\u201d to Paul isn\u2019t hard enough, we have several other board members who are ending their service due to term limits. Each one of them has made a decisive impact on USJC, and I will miss their guidance, support and friendship dearly:&nbsp;<strong>Yuko Kaifu<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Norman Nakasone<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>David Nishida<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Scott Sato<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>Tasha Yorozu<\/strong>.
