On July 27, Board of Councilors Member Representative Mark Takano (D-CA) met with ten DC high school students in his office. The students are enrolled in the summer program Japan in DC, led by Sally Schwartz (Globalize DC). Ms. Schwartz co-coordinated the TOMODACHI U.S.-Japan Youth Exchange Program from 2013 to 2016 and continues to maintain a close relationship with the U.S.-Japan Council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Japan in DC program allowed students to learn more about World War II over the summer. Rep. Takano\u2019s meeting with the students was intended as a way for students to learn more about the Japanese American incarceration experience and the experiences of Japanese American veterans and their families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congressman Takano was very open and willing to share his experiences with the students. Students\u2019 questions covered a multitude of topics, including Rep. Takano\u2019s path to becoming a Congressman, his upbringing and community environment. Rep. Takano also generously answered questions regarding his family history, his relatives\u2019 war experiences and personal experiences with racial prejudice. He encouraged the students to stay curious and travel to Japan in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
