The 2026 Japanese American Leadership Delegation (JALD)<\/strong> recently returned from an inspirational visit to Japan from March 6\u201314. The JALD program provides the opportunity for a select group of Japanese American leaders from across the United States to travel to Japan to engage with Japanese leaders in the business, government, academic, non-profit and cultural sectors. The trip also allows Japanese leaders to gain a greater understanding of multicultural America through the experiences of a diverse group of Japanese Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nine Japanese Americans from across the United States were selected for this year’s delegation. JALD is sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA), represented in the United States by the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C. and seventeen consulate general\/consular offices, and is administered by the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC). JALD is a premiere program of USJC and delegates are selected by their local consulate general offices for their potential future contributions in strengthening U.S.-Japan relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delegation engaged with key leaders across government and business, including Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy Aaron D. Snipe<\/strong>, Foreign Minister of Japan Toshimitsu Motegi<\/strong>, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara<\/strong>, Cabinet Public Relations Secretary Kozo Saiki<\/strong>, Member of the House of Representatives Taro Kono<\/strong>, and the Japan-U.S. Parliamentary Friendship League, as well as Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado<\/strong>. On the business side, delegates met with Keidanren, Keizai Doyukai, Central Japan Railway Company, and SPACETIDE. A visit to JICA’s Japanese Overseas Migration Museum in Yokohama and a meeting with the Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture added meaningful historical and regional context. The program concluded with a USJC networking event in Shibuya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon their return, delegates will collaborate with JALD alumni, the local consulates, the U.S.-Japan Council and local and national community organizations to continue strengthening ties between the United States and Japan. This program was busy with incredible opportunities to meet and connect with Japanese leaders, allowing an open exchange of ideas and perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extraordinary JALD experience helped to connect these Japanese American leaders with their cultural heritage, deepening the bond with their ancestral homeland and each other, while invigorating and mobilizing this delegation’s commitment to continue the people-to-people relationship between the United States and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
