Universities were paired with a partner university to facilitate the exchanges. The American students traveled to Japan in the summer of 2014. The U.S. faculty leads are Japanese American and members of the U.S.-Japan Council. Nearly all of them knew the Senator and\/or his work personally. Upon my return from Japan, I contemplated what exactly I missed the most \u2012 and, true to the program\u02bcs name, it was the bridges I built with my newfound friends. &#8216;KAKEHASHI&#8217; and &#8216;TOMODACHI&#8217; translate into &#8216;bridge&#8217; and &#8216;friend,&#8217; respectively. Upon my acceptance, I was both nervous and anxious at how I would be able to truly experience what Japan has to offer without having any knowledge of the language.\u201d<\/p>\n        <cite class=\"m-quote_author\">&#8211;&nbsp;Alexandra Chomik from DePaul University <\/cite>\n      <\/blockquote>\n          <blockquote class=\"m-quote\">\n        <p class=\"m-quote_text\">\u201cThis trip has sparked more interest in potential careers where I could have interactions with Japan, or even have an opportunity to work in Japan at some point.&#8221;<\/p>\n        <cite class=\"m-quote_author\">&#8211;&nbsp;Anders Conroy from DePaul University<\/cite>\n      <\/blockquote>\n          <blockquote class=\"m-quote\">\n        <p class=\"m-quote_text\">\u201cWhen the African Americans came back from the war, they sought out equality, just like Senator Inouye when he returned from serving in the military . . . It never really registered in my mind how limited our views and perspectives of the Civil Rights Movement were. I feel like this class posed more questions that were thought-provoking as opposed to my regular classes that just present us with information to memorize.&#8221;<\/p>\n        <cite class=\"m-quote_author\">&#8211;&nbsp;A Student from LMU<\/cite>\n      <\/blockquote>\n          <blockquote class=\"m-quote\">\n        <p class=\"m-quote_text\">&#8220;As TOMODACHI Inouye scholars we are all striving to learn more about ourselves and the world. Textbooks can\u2019t even begin to touch upon the lessons we\u2019ve acquired on this trip. In just 10 days we have all grown, expanded, broadened our hearts and minds; I am changed. [&#8230;] From the history that we have with Ehime and seeing first hand how great achievements can come from the ashes of tragedy, Sen.
