The event brought together approximately 20 participants, including senior government officials, business leaders, and experts from both the United States and Japan. Participants explored the concept of machizukuri (community development) and discussed the distinction between recovery (fukky\u016b) and reconstruction (fukk\u014d), emphasizing the importance of the \u201cBuild Back Better\u201d approach. Conversations also connected lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 with the ongoing recovery efforts in Noto. In collaboration with the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation (EUJC), the seminar addressed the particularly challenging issue of reducing Scope 3 emissions generated across global supply chains and highlighted high anticipation for the widespread adoption of \u201cgreen materials\u201d for key components, which account for the majority of these emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing that cooperative efforts from both the supply and demand sides are essential, the seminar featured policymakers and experts representing the entire supply chain, including the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), BHP Billiton Japan Limited, Nippon Steel Corporation, JX Advanced Metals Corporation, and NEWSCON Inc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussions focused on sustainability strategies for materials, in particular, green steel and non-ferrous metals, and EU and Japan market and policy trends. However, there are many challenges, including rising costs and the broader business environment. The event was co-hosted by the U.S. Embassy, the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC), and the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ). Designed to foster collaboration and innovation, the event featured a dynamic lineup of keynote panels, roundtable discussions and closed-door sessions that delved into the pressing issues of the day. The two-hour dialogue addressed how near-term action to reduce methane emissions could increase gas supply and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. This event was held within the Council\u2019s Climate and Sustainability Initiative supported by the Initiative\u2019s Founding Strategic Partner, Amazon.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Methane, a greenhouse gas, is often overlooked for the better-known carbon dioxide (CO2). However, methane warrants greater attention as it is responsible for about 30% of the current rise in global temperatures, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-methane-tracker-2022\/methane-and-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IEA<\/a>. Methane concentration in the atmosphere is about 2.5 times greater than pre-industrial levels, and is rising steadily as a result of continued fossil fuel (oil, gas, coal) operations and burning biomass (woodlands, savanna, agricultural waste).
