Ms. Marillyn Hewson’s Keynote Speech (Summary) – 2014 Annual Conference

The following is a summary of the Keynote Speech by Ms. Marillyn A. Hewson, Chairman, President and CEO, Lockheed Martin Corporation, at the 2014 U.S.-Japan Council Annual Conference on October 10, 2014. 

Ms. Hewson shared with the audience the commitment to collaboration and partnership that she has observed through her travels to Japan as CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation.  She explained that the Government of Japan has grown to become one of the company’s largest international customers, and that Lockheed’s partnerships with Japanese industries have become important to its continued success.  She shared with the audience a survey of the security challenges the United States and Japan must face as allies, and explained how collaboration will help overcome these, highlighting opportunities to shape a shared future in the areas of security, growth, and sustainability.  She reviewed the critical weapons systems that Lockheed Martin provides to Japan for its defense that include Aegis destroyers, PAC-3 missiles, and the F-35/Joint Strike Fighter, and also raised the importance of cyber security.  She also pointed to the importance of trade and innovation to drive growth, and stressed her company’s commitment to investing in the next generation and people-to-people relationships, a value shared with USJC and the TOMODACHI Initiative.  Finally, she spoke to the role of sustainability in U.S.-Japan relations, highlighting innovative investments Lockheed Martin has made in Hawaii in the areas of clean energy and sustainable fisheries.  Ms. Hewson left the audience inspired to think about the possibilities inherent in the promise of connection between the United States and Japan, and appreciative of the many ways that Lockheed Martin leads U.S. industry in building on that promise.
