In lieu of the quarterly networking sessions, the Shin-Issei affinity group welcomes Shin-Issei panelists with different backgrounds to analyze our communication behaviors as we live in two (or more) languages, seemingly seamlessly. When Shin-Isseis speak among ourselves or with other bilingual people, how do we choose which language to use and why? What do we gain and/or lose by making such a choice? The panel will explore unspoken rules with input from the audience.

Panelists:

Chika Seidel, Associate Director, IP Litigation, Astellas Pharma

Tasha Yorozu (JALD ‘16), Managing Attorney at Miura & Partners US

Yumi Araki (ELP ‘23), Managing Producer, America’s Test Kitchen

Moderator

Yumi Higashi, Legal Assistant, Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf LLP / JD candidate, Brooklyn Law School

The Shin-Issei affinity group enjoys quarterly Zoom networking events in which we discuss topics relevant to our identity as the newest Japanese Americans. Selected events are open to Shin-Isseis who are not yet USJC members as a way to introduce USJC. Additional Shin-Issei programs including networking events, the Shin-Issei Connection, and student outreach opportunities are for USJC members only. For inquiries, please contact the Shin-Issei Steering Committee at [email protected].
