
On Thursday, May 22, 2025, the U.S.-Japan Council (USJC) Board of Councilors & VIP Reception was held at the Tokyo American Club. The reception featured a keynote speech from His Excellency, KONO Taro, Member of the House of Representatives who held a number of executive positions in the Japanese government. Approximately 35 USJC Board Members and prominent supporters participated in the event and engaged in vibrant discussion together.
The event began with welcoming remarks by Ernest Higa, Chair of the USJC Board of Councilors. He highlighted the importance of the U.S.-Japan relationship during these uncertain times. Sachi Hamai, Chair of the USJC Board of Directors, shared opening remarks that stressed that the role of the Council is needed now more than ever.
The keynote speech by Rep. KONO highlighted the importance of U.S.-Japan relations on three levels — government, business, and people-to-people connections. Reflecting on his recent commencement speech at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service and personal experience studying in the United States, he stressed the importance of cultural and academic exchange, encouraging young Japanese to study overseas. Rep. KONO also suggested steps Japan should take to ease trade tensions with the United States. Following his speech, he engaged in thoughtful dialogue with attendees during the Q&A session.
USJC President and CEO Audrey Yamamoto provided closing remarks and shared a brief update on plans to deepen USJC’s impact, broaden its reach, and elevate its brand. She also thanked everyone for their continued support and engagement as USJC enters its next chapter of growth and impact.
