During its latest virtual networking event, the Shin-Issei affinity group hosted a panel titled, Extremely Inappropriate! – Shin-Issei Perspectives, on October 10 (October 11 Japan time). Inspired by the 2024 television hit comedy, Extremely Inappropriate! (不適切にもほどがある!), where a physical education teacher and single father from the Showa era time-travels to 2024 and finds his behavior is socially unacceptable in the heightened “wokeness” in the Reiwa era, the panelists shared their insights on how social norms have evolved in their workplaces, both in the United States and Japan.

The moderator and the new Shin-Issei affinity group chair, Ichi Sekimitsu (Hawaii), and the three panelists, Aya Iwasuji (NorCal), Toshiki Masaki (Michigan) and Nori Tarui (Hawaii) compared the trends in the U.S. and Japan that they saw in their respective industries – finance, technology, manufacturing and education. Attendees then split into several breakout rooms to continue the dialogue in a more intimate setting.
