USJC Board of Councilors Meets with Ambassador Rahm Emanuel

On June 14, 2022 (Japan time), Members of the U.S.-Japan Council Board of Councilors (U.S. & Japan) joined a stimulating conversation with Ambassador Rahm Emanuel at his residence. Board Chairs Ernest Higa and Kathy Matsui, President & CEO Suzanne Basalla and a dozen Board Members attended. Japan Regional Co-Chair Eriko Stronach also joined, representing USJC’s Next Generation leaders.

Ambassador Emanuel provided an overview of his agenda, initial observations, and his expectations for Japan. The broad-ranging talk focused on the security agenda, Japan’s global leadership position and appeal, and areas for energy and climate collaboration. Members valued the Ambassador’s insights and forthright manner, as well as his warm welcome to continue the dialogue.

The meeting was particularly special because it was the very first meeting to convene in the Norman Yoshio Mineta Room since its dedication by President Biden. Mr. Mineta had been serving as Vice Chair of the USJC Board of Councilors for over 10 years at the time of his passing.

The Council greatly appreciates Ambassador Emanuel for his time and warm support of USJC and the TOMODACHI Initiative, and looks forward to a continued partnership.
