Regional Women in Leadership

USJC members with local leaders at a Regional Women in Leadership series event in Seattle

Overview

The Regional Women in Leadership series is a program generously supported by the Embassy of Japan. USJC members organize and attend panels, events and luncheons in their respective regions to network and discuss topics focused on women’s leadership, including women entrepreneurs, leadership among millennial women, working with disabilities, challenging biases, balancing careers and families, and the importance of strong mentorships.

2019

USJC members continued to organize and participate in the Regional Women in Leadership series. In December, USJC Associate Miki Sankary, in coordination with the Lehigh Valley “Japanese in America, Japanese American, and Japanese Aficionado” (JAJAJA) community, organized an RWL event in Bethlehem, PA. Deputy Consul General Kenju Murakami of the Consulate in New York City discussed Japan’s Womenomics agenda, and community leaders shared their experience contributing to U.S.-Japan relations. Apart from RWL, in August, USJC members and supporters gathered in Silicon Valley to discuss ways to develop programs for women in technology.

Past Activities

In 2015, the U.S.-Japan Council launched the Regional Women in Leadership Networking in Ten Cities Series through the generous funding of the Embassy of Japan. Over the course of 25 individual networking sessions, over 100 leaders came together for substantive discussions about “Womenomics” and women in leadership. The Council has continued this Women in Leadership Series in 2016, with members hosting events in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, and Washington. While the events focus on women in leadership, each had a specific theme including women leaders in the workplace, strong mentorships, “Womenomics,” challenging stereotypes and biases, working with disabilities, young entrepreneurs, and diversity. This series has resulted in a number of concrete suggestions for changes in government and workplace policy, as well as mindset.
